“Big dreams allow children to learn that they are responsible for their choices rather than being a victim of their circumstances,” says Sara Westbrook, a well-known motivational speaker. Big dreams help develop empathy, creativity, and determination, the three magical elements to superhero kids.
From global warming to poverty, our world is facing many tremendous challenges. Big progresses take big dreamers. So, let’s help our children to dream big.
“Dreams don’t work unless you do,” says the #1 New York Times’ bestselling author, John C. Maxwell. Dreaming big means having the desire and courage to aim for a big goal. It also means setting realistic steps to tackle the big dream.
6 Steps To Dream Big and Get There
STEP 1: DREAM WITH THEM
Everybody has a dream. The most effective way to teach the art of dreaming to children is to share your goals with them. To show them by example how you pursue your dreams. Children do not do what you say, they do what you do. Think big with them!
STEP 2: INSPIRE THEM WITH BIG DREAMS
If you are like me, you are dreaming big, but at some point between the starting point and the finishing point, you will need some other examples to inspire them, too. Every successful person has a story. Tell children about these great people and how they have overcome obstacles and almost impossible odds to inspire them. It helps them believe that their dream, no matter how big, can come true if they work hard and never give up.
STEP 3: MAKE DREAMS GOALS
Dreaming big is only great if we also turn them into goals. Support your children in whatever dreams they have, even the silly ones. In time, help them to turn those dreams into goals and to work towards them.
STEP 4: SET SMALLER GOALS LEADING TO BIG GOALS
Reaching a big goal may take months, even years. That is why setting a smaller goal first is essential. Achieving any goal, even small ones, will lead to a feeling of accomplishment. The series of finished goals can motivate anyone, and in no time, the big goal will not be too far from reach. I love the example of the Taekwondo belt test. It is the path to mastering the elements of the big goals one small goal at a time.
STEP 5: DO IT AT A PACE THAT IS FUN FOR THEM
Nothing is better than doing what you love… until you hate it. Help children pace their efforts. Encourage them when they feel frustrated. Advise them when they are too eager to do everything all at once. Help them learn that all great things takes time. The best part of dreaming big is to enjoy the process of getting there.
STEP 6: PREPARE FOR OBSTACLES FOR BOTH PARENTS AND CHILDREN
According to a well-founded study by Gabriele Oettingen, having an expectation of obstacles and a prepared mindset to problem solve are keys to the success rate for achieving goals. It is important to help children think through potential obstacles and to prepare them with the mindset that big challenges are the reason that big dreams are awesome. Be ready to encourage them when they face such challenges.
